IAI Scholarships

The Italian Australian Institute (IAI) awards annual scholarships valued at $2,000 each, to students who are enrolled in an approved tertiary course at an Australian university and who are undertaking either their final honours year, or other postgraduate work. The scholarships are aimed at contributing financial assistance to a prospective applicant who is working towards the completion of a thesis relevant to the Italian-Australian experience in all its manifestations including literary, socio-economic, political, artistic and historical themes. The Institute is committed to publishing the researcher’s thesis, and reserves first option to do so, in print and electronic form, either whole or in part, providing the thesis has gained an HI or H2A (honours) grade pass.

CONDITIONS OF ELIGIBILITY

Further selection criteria are as follows:

1.    No age restriction applies.

2.    Thesis length – 12,000 words (min).

3.    The application must be completed and submitted by the  applicant.

4.   The application must include a summary of the proposed research topic and be accompanied by a letter of support from a supervisor.

5.    One half of the allocated scholarship funds will be consigned on the formal commencement of work on the topic and the other half will be consigned upon successful completion of the thesis.

6.    Awarding of any scholarship is dependant on both the submission and an interview between the applicant and an appropriately designated panel of the IAI.

7.    The ‘moral’ right remains with the author, although the IAI retains the right to publish the thesis, in print and electronic form, either whole or in part.

8.    The closing date for applications for an IAI Scholarship is 28th February every year.

Students who intend to undertake a Masters or a Doctoral thesis based on research on any aspect of life in the Italian community in Australia may also, if they wish, apply for an IAI Scholarship.  Their application will be evaluated and the eventual amount of financial assistance will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
